History from the Machine: Implications of AI for Universities
As a speaker at the 54th German Historians' Congress, I addressed the integration of AI within historical science.
The discussion revolved around the challenges historians face in comprehending the epistemological implications of AI methods & evaluating their meaningful application. In the context of historical culture, it will be necessary to find answers to the major societal challenges posed by AI in dealing with the past, especially since debunking falsehoods is more difficult than creating and disseminating them (Brandolini's Law). With a socio-technical perspective on AI, I emphasized the importance of a historically & politically nuanced approach, one that embraces multiperspectivity.
Understanding history as constructed empowers individuals to reflect on, interpret, and evaluate historical events in context, skills increasingly relevant in the digital age.
